The Commission on Elections (COMELEC) has issued a reminder to political parties, candidates, and party-list groups to avoid disseminating false information on social media platforms.
During the National Election Game Changer Summit held in November 2024, COMELEC Commissioner Nelson Celis emphasized the importance of accuracy in social media posts.
“Don’t post any fake news that would create disinformation or misinformation. Otherwise, you will be committing an election offense,” Celis said.
He referred to COMELEC Resolution 11064, which mandates candidates and parties to register their official social media accounts, websites, and other online campaign platforms with the commission.
To address online misinformation, the poll body has established “Task Force Katotohanan, Katapatan at Katarungan sa Halalan,” tasked with monitoring and regulating social media content, including attacks or false claims targeting COMELEC, its officials, or the electoral process.
“So far, we have 2,000 social media accounts that have been registered to COMELEC,” Celis noted.
He reiterated COMELEC’s commitment to upholding credible elections and actively countering misinformation and disinformation.
