Magnolia’s Defense Shines in Crucial Win Over Hong Kong Eastern

Magnolia delivered a 107-78 victory against Hong Kong Eastern on Sunday in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup, keeping their playoff hopes alive. Head coach Chito Victolero expressed optimism as the Hotshots remain in contention for a postseason spot.

The decisive 29-point win, coupled with San Miguel’s 115-97 loss to TNT Tropang Giga later that evening, provided Magnolia with renewed momentum in their playoff push.

As of Sunday’s results, Magnolia and NLEX share the eighth spot in the standings, while the defending champion San Miguel Beermen ended their elimination round with a 5-7 record. The Beermen now await the results of the final two elimination games this week to see if they can secure the last playoff berth.

“The word is survival. We approached this game with urgency and the proper mindset,” said Victolero. Magnolia’s dominance stemmed from a strong second-quarter performance, outscoring Hong Kong Eastern 26-12.

Five Magnolia players scored in double figures, led by import Ricardo Ratliffe, who posted 25 points and 16 rebounds. Despite the offensive outburst, Victolero emphasized defense as the team’s foundation. “Defense is our calling card. Our backs are against the wall, but we’ll keep focusing on defense, practicing, and addressing our mistakes,” he said.

Magnolia benefited from a 10-day break before the match, giving them ample time to prepare. The team also welcomed back veteran shooter Paul Lee, who had missed three games due to a meniscus tear. While Lee was limited to 12 minutes and went scoreless, Victolero highlighted his leadership. “His presence brings direction and composure to the team,” the coach added.

Young stars Jerom Lastimosa and Zavier Lucero stepped up, scoring 20 points each to anchor Magnolia’s offense against the guest squad.

The Hotshots will face Meralco in a do-or-die match on Friday at Philsports Arena as they aim to secure a playoff spot.
